Day 4 - Thursday

We had another adventurous day!

The campers visited a local barn where they had the opportunity to meet horses, donkeys, and goats.

Spending time with different animals helps the campers learn about the unique needs of other species and how those needs may differ from our own.

During our visit, we revisited the 8 Spheres of Enrichment and explored how enrichment applies not only to dogs, but to horses, donkeys, goats, and people as well.

The experience encouraged the campers to think about what helps different animals feel safe, healthy, engaged, and fulfilled while gaining a broader understanding of animal welfare and care.

The campers also had the opportunity to help deliver food and supplements to the horses while learning about their daily care routines. Along the way, they discussed safety and the important role nutrition plays in overall health and well-being.

This hands-on experience gave the campers a glimpse into the responsibility and dedication required to care for animals each day. It also sparked conversations about domestication and how, when animals are kept in our care, it becomes our responsibility to meet their physical, mental, and emotional needs.

Whether caring for horses at a barn or pets in our homes, they depend on humans understanding and providing for all of their needs.

After our visit to the barn, the campers headed to a local trail where they took their pups on a hiking adventure.

Hiking provides wonderful enrichment for dogs by allowing them to explore new sights, sounds, smells, and surfaces.

For the campers, it was an opportunity to practice handling skills, observe their dogs in a new environment, and learn how outdoor adventures can support a dog's physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Along the trail, the campers and dogs had the opportunity to wade into the lake together.

This provided a fun way to cool off while allowing the dogs to explore a new environment through water, movement, and scent.

One of the highlights of the hike was navigating the large rocks along the water's edge.

The campers carefully guided their dogs across the uneven terrain, learning the importance of patience, communication, and working together.

For the dogs, the changing surfaces and obstacles provided valuable physical and mental experiences.

For the campers, it was an opportunity to build trust, confidence, and teamwork while helping their canine partners safely navigate a new challenge.

More adventures tomorrow!
