Day 1 - Monday
We kicked off the day with introductions to help everyone get comfortable and get to know one another.
Campers took on the classic human knot challenge before putting a fun twist on it by creating a “shoe knot,” building teamwork, communication, and sharing plenty of laughs along the way.

Next, campers learned the fundamentals of safe and responsible dog handling, including proper leash handling, feeding, tracking food intake, and recognizing each dog’s individual needs.
With those skills in mind, it was finally time to meet our canine campers!
We began with neutral introductions, where campers sat with their backs to each dog’s crate and gently tossed kibble, rotating every few minutes so each dog could meet everyone in a calm environment.
Once the dogs were comfortable, campers headed outside for one-on-one interactions, walking and handling every dog to learn each one’s unique personality, energy level, and preferences.
Then came one of the most exciting moments of the day—the PAIRINGS!
After spending time with every dog, each camper thoughtfully selected the dog they felt would be the best match for the rest of camp, considering how they could work together as a team.

To wrap up the morning, we reviewed camp expectations, including caring for their dogs at home, homework assignments, sleepover plans, and the exciting activities still to come.
After lunch and a fun game of modified musical chairs, campers headed out on a field trip to Orange County Animal Services (OCAS).
They toured the facility, met adoptable dogs with a wide variety of personalities and needs, and learned about the important role animal shelters play in caring for homeless pets and helping them find forever homes.

Back at Doglando, campers reflected on what they had seen, discussing responsible pet ownership, the adoption process, and the qualities that make a successful match between dogs and families.

They then put their new knowledge into practice by beginning crate exercises with their dogs, learning how calm body language, movement, and energy influence canine behavior and help build trust and confidence.

We can't wait to share more Camp Doglando adventures with you tomorrow!
