Day 8 - Wednesday
Today's adventures at camp included a visit to the Canine Companions facility, where the campers had the opportunity to meet a service dog in training and learn about the organization's mission.
During the tour, the campers explored the journey from puppy raising to advanced training and placement.
They learned about the important role service dogs play in supporting independence and improving quality of life for people with disabilities, as well as the dedication and teamwork required to prepare these remarkable dogs for their future careers.

The campers also had the opportunity to observe a trainer demonstrating how service dog tasks are taught and developed over time.
Using a hearing alert behavior as an example, they learned how complex skills are broken down into small, achievable steps that can be taught and reinforced individually.
This activity helped the campers better understand the training process and reinforced an important lesson from camp: successful learning happens when we set dogs up for success by communicating clearly, building skills gradually, and celebrating progress along the way.

Next, the campers and counselors visited Pet Rescue By Judy, where they received a behind-the-scenes look at the realities of animal rescue.
During the tour, they learned about the daily operations of a rescue organization and the many challenges facing animal welfare today.
The visit sparked important conversations about the growing number of dogs being surrendered to shelters and rescues, while adoptions have slowed in many areas.
Campers gained a deeper understanding of the responsibility involved in pet ownership and the impact that community support can have on helping animals find loving homes.
The group also had the opportunity to speak with Judy about her personal journey in rescue work. Through her stories and experiences, the campers learned about the dedication, compassion, and perseverance required to advocate for animals and make a difference in their lives.

Back on campus, the campers worked with their dogs to create a tug toy using an old t-shirt from home.
They then taught their dogs how to engage in a game of tug in a safe and enjoyable way. Through this activity, the campers learned that play can be an important form of enrichment and relationship-building.
They also explored how interactive games like tug can provide an outlet for natural behaviors while creating opportunities for communication, cooperation, and fun between dogs and their handlers.
The activity was a great reminder that meaningful enrichment doesn't have to be expensive and sometimes a simple household item and a little creativity can create a rewarding experience for both dogs and people.

The day ended with the campers working together to care for their shared camp space.
From cleaning floors and bathrooms to taking out trash, organizing supplies, and helping prepare for end-of-week activities, everyone played a role in keeping camp running smoothly.
While not as exciting as some of the day's adventures, these responsibilities provided valuable lessons in teamwork, accountability, and taking pride in a shared environment.

The campers learned that being part of a community means contributing to its success and helping care for the spaces and resources we all enjoy.
More adventures to come!
